Geopolitical Tensions Strain Zambia-Zimbabwe Relations
Geopolitical tensions involving Russia and the Western world are causing a strain on the longstanding friendship between neighbouring countries Zambia and Zimbabwe.
This rift is the second in recent years between the Southern African nations.
Zambia, under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership since 2021, has strengthened ties with the West.
In contrast, Zimbabwe has faced conflict with Western nations, especially since the early 2000s when it reclaimed land from the white minority.
This move led to sanctions from the West, prompting Zimbabwe to seek partnerships with Asian countries and Russia.
Recently, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa visited Russia to bolster these alliances, sparking controversy.
During his visit, Mnangagwa criticized Zambia for its growing alignment with Western powers, accusing them of isolating Zimbabwe.
His remarks included appeals to Russia for support in defence and food security.
In response, Zambian officials, particularly from the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), expressed outrage.
Joseph Kalimbwe, a prominent UPND member, called for the expulsion of Zimbabwe’s ambassador and suggested boycotting an upcoming Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit hosted by Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwean reactions have been equally strong, with officials from the ruling party, ZANU-PF, labeling President Hichilema as a project of the USA.
