Lusaka Mayor Attends ‘Waste no Waste, Trash is Treasure’ Campaign Auction
Her Worship the Mayor, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, was among the distinguished delegates at the “Waste no Waste, Trash is Treasure” Campaign Auction held this morning at the Lusaka National Museum.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Italian Embassy in collaboration with the Lusaka City Council, Dangote Cement, and other partnering organisations, aimed to highlight the significance of waste separation and to showcase artistic works by Zambian artists, who provided unique interpretations of the recycling theme: Trash is Treasure.
The event featured 42 beautifully painted oil drums, some of which will be installed along Cairo Road and other locations around the city.
Fourteen of these drums were auctioned at the event, with proceeds benefiting both the artists and a cleanup campaign scheduled ahead of the next rainy season. This cleanup will target areas severely affected by the Cholera outbreak earlier this year.
Mayor Chitangala urged Lusaka residents to protect and utilise the bins installed around the city for their intended purposes.
She expressed her gratitude to the Italian Embassy for initiating this project, which supports local waste management efforts and promotes the talents of Zambian artists.
“The collaboration between the Italian Embassy and our local authority is commendable, as it not only addresses waste management but also fosters artistic expression within our community,” she said.
