Airtel Africa and ASN Illuminate African Connectivity with 2Africa Submarine Cable Activation

Airtel Telesonic, the wholesale division of Airtel Africa, has successfully activated the first phase of the 2Africa submarine cable system. This landmark project promises to significantly enhance internet connectivity across the continent, starting with the initial connections in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

The 2Africa cable system, one of the largest subsea projects globally, is designed to interconnect Africa, Europe, and Asia. This activation marks a crucial milestone in delivering high-speed, reliable internet access, fostering digital transformation across Africa.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to provide faster and more resilient internet services, supporting economic growth and technological advancement in the region.

Airtel Telesonic’s achievement is a result of its strategic partnership with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), a leader in optical submarine network deployment. ASN’s involvement ensured the deployment of their latest SLTE platform, PSI-SUB, known for its gridless, modular, and colorless architecture.

This state-of-the-art technology is poised to accommodate next-generation transponders, ensuring the system is future-proof and capable of evolving with technological advancements.

PD Sarma, CEO of Airtel Telesonic, expressed his excitement over the successful activation: “The activation of the 2Africa submarine cable is a monumental step in our mission to bridge the digital divide in Africa. Airtel is proud to launch the first phase of the 2Africa cable system powered by the latest SLTE equipment from our partner.

This project not only underscores our commitment to investing in advanced infrastructure but also our dedication to empowering communities with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age. Paul Gabla, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at ASN, highlighted the significance of the collaboration: “ASN is very pleased to support Airtel with our cutting-edge SLTE equipment on the 2Africa cable system.

This partnership underscores our dedication to continuing the fast delivery of world-class SLTE technological solutions. This important milestone highlights the strength of collaboration and innovation in bringing advanced connectivity solutions to Africa through our partnership with Airtel.”
