President of Angola and Chairperson of SADC to Visit SADC Secretariat in Botswana
His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), is set to visit the SADC Secretariat Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana on June 14, 2024.
President Lourenço will be received by H.E. Mr. Elias M. Magosi, the SADC Executive Secretary, along with the management team of the SADC Secretariat and the SADC Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to Botswana and SADC.
This visit aligns with the tradition of SADC Chairpersons visiting the Secretariat during their tenure to gain insights into the Secretariat’s efforts in facilitating regional integration and to provide strategic guidance for the implementation of SADC programs.
President Lourenço assumed the role of SADC Chairperson on August 17, 2023, during the 43rd SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Luanda, Angola.
His visit to the Secretariat will include briefings on the status of SADC regional integration, the implementation of SADC programs, and regional priorities outlined in the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030 and Vision 2050. The Chairperson will also address the SADC Secretariat staff.
During his leadership, the 43rd SADC Summit adopted the theme for 2022-2023: “Human and Financial Capital: The Key Drivers for Sustainable Industrialisation in the SADC Region.” This theme underscores the importance of human resources and financial capital as crucial enablers for sustainable industrialization.
As the SADC Chairperson, President Lourenço oversees the highest level of governance within the organization, providing policy direction and overseeing the functions of SADC.
