Lusaka Mayor Seeks ECA Support to Enhance Fiscal Space
Lusaka Mayor, Her Worship Ms. Chilando Chitangala, has reached out to the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) for assistance in enhancing the fiscal space for the Lusaka City Council (LCC).
During her participation in the ongoing Development Account – Expanded Fiscal Space project inception meeting at the UNECA Zambia country office, Ms. Chitangala urged for support in setting up a revenue database system for the city.
Highlighting the importance of an integrated revenue collection system, staff capacity building, and the identification of new revenue streams, Mayor Chitangala emphasized the need for an expanded and inclusive fiscal space.
Key revenue sources such as billboards, business levies, fire fees, and rates were identified as crucial lifelines for the local authority’s operations and development initiatives.
Additionally, the mayor advocated for the formalization of informal sector players to enable them to benefit from government interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of unforeseen natural shocks on the fiscal space.
In response, ECA delegation lead Atkeyelsh Persson expressed gratitude for the mayor’s commitment to the success of the Development Account – Expanded Fiscal Space project.
Ms. Persson assured continued technical support and an enabling environment for knowledge sharing among project stakeholders.
The Development Account project aims to enhance financial management capabilities, implement innovative fiscal policies and reforms, and improve City-National government fiscal collaboration over a three-year period.
