Malawi Vice President Feared Dead in Plane Crash
Fears are growing over the safety of Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima after his plane reportedly crash-landed in Chikangawa forest.
The incident occurred when a Malawi Defence Force chopper, carrying the Vice President, failed to land at Mzuzu Airport this morning due to adverse weather conditions.
Chilima was en route to attend the funeral of lawyer Ralph Kasambara when the chopper encountered difficulties.
After being unable to land, the aircraft attempted to return to Lilongwe but is feared to have crashed in the dense forest of Chikangawa.
Eyewitnesses in the area reported seeing a crash, raising concerns that it involved the Vice President’s aircraft.
Government sources have not yet confirmed the incident, but President Lazarus Chakwera has reportedly canceled his planned trip to the Bahamas, heightening speculation about the seriousness of the situation.
Sources indicate that Vice President Chilima’s phone was last active around 10:30 am, and the plane was expected back in Lilongwe within an hour after its departure from Mzuzu.
The crash site in Chikangawa is currently being investigated, and rescue operations are believed to be underway.
