UPND Alleges Scheme to Remove ZESCO MD Victor Mapani
The United Party for National Development (UPND) has alleged a scheme orchestrated by certain individuals to remove Victor Mapani, the Managing Director of ZESCO, from his position.
UPND National Chairperson for Labour and Social Security, Godfrey Beene, revealed this during a media briefing in Lusaka, claiming the campaign is driven by those who benefited from corruption under the previous administration.
Mr. Beene stated that the party is aware of a vicious, sponsored social media campaign targeting Mr. Mapani.
He described these maneuvers as attempts to destabilize ZESCO’s operations and undermine Mr. Mapani’s professional integrity.
“Mr. Mapani is a victim of a malicious campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation,” Beene said.
He emphasized that under Mr. Mapani’s leadership, ZESCO has successfully closed loopholes previously exploited for corrupt activities, particularly in the procurement of goods and services.
The introduction of transparency in contract allocations has significantly reduced corruption and improved efficiency in service delivery.
To further safeguard against corruption, ZESCO has established a committee comprising representatives from all relevant departments, ensuring no individual has unilateral authority to award contracts.
Mr. Beene warned that removing Mr. Mapani, who has demonstrated a high level of competence, would undermine the transformative agenda aimed at revitalizing the power utility company.
In a related statement, UPND Deputy Media Director Cheelo Katambo urged the Zambia Police to act decisively against cadres exhibiting unruly behavior, regardless of their political affiliation.
“The Police should not look at the color of the party regalia worn by the unruly cadres but should act decisively,” Katambo stated.
