SADC to Convene Joint Meeting of Energy and Water Ministers
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is set to hold a significant Joint Committee meeting of Ministers responsible for Energy and Water in Luanda, Republic of Angola, from May 27th to May 31st, 2024.
In the energy sector, discussions will center on the progress made since the previous Ministerial meeting, focusing on the security of energy supply and advancements in sustainable regional power sector development.
Key agenda items include the proposal for the development of a Regional Transmission Infrastructure Financing Facility (RTIFF) and the signing of the Agreement Amending SADC Protocol on Energy of 1996.
Additionally, the meeting will address regulatory initiatives and the promotion of renewable energy sources, emphasizing the operationalization of SACREEE and migration towards cleaner fuels.
Meanwhile, in the water sector, Ministers will assess the delivery of regional initiatives aimed at enhancing water and sanitation services, including transboundary water projects led by river basin organizations.
Discussions will also cover progress in regional water infrastructure financing, the implementation of the regional groundwater program, and ongoing efforts in revising the regional water policy.
The Joint Meeting will be preceded by sessions of Senior Officials responsible for the energy and water sectors, providing an opportunity to lay the groundwork for substantive discussions at the ministerial level.
