Young Congolese Photographers Capture Hope and Resilience in Eastern DRC
A recent photography exhibition titled “Through the Lens of Tomorrow” showcased the works of young Congolese photographers, highlighting stories of hope and progress in a region grappling with conflict.
The exhibition, a collaboration between Lens on Life and Canon’s Young People Programme (CYPP), trained and mentored marginalized youth in Goma, equipping them with photography and computer skills.
Students used their newfound skills to document stories centered around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including gender equality, climate action, and poverty reduction.
One impactful series by Daniel Tsongo captured the work of entrepreneurs who use agriculture to address food insecurity and create jobs for young people.
Another photographer, Aristote Basizi, documented local efforts to support women seeking justice for sexual and gender-based violence.
“Through the Lens of Tomorrow” aimed to inspire positive change, instill community pride, and encourage continued support for photography and sustainable development initiatives in the region.
The exhibition’s success has led Lens on Life to plan similar events in Iraq and Jordan, promoting underrepresented voices on a global scale.
The Canon Young People Programme empowers young people across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region through visual storytelling, reaching over 6,750 individuals in 27 countries.
