FQM Commits to President’s Call for Skills Development to Tackle Unemployment

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has pledged its support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s initiative to enhance skills development in mining communities as a strategy to address unemployment.

During Labour Day celebrations attended by the President, FQM Trident Human Resource Manager Brighton Mwiinga emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring that its employees play a central role in driving economic recovery by enhancing productivity in the mining sector.

Mr. Mwiinga stressed the importance of employees possessing the right knowledge and competencies for their roles, highlighting the correlation between skill level and productivity.

He emphasized the need for a well-coordinated workforce to maximize efficiency and overall business success.

Similarly, Kansanshi Mining Human Resource Manager Mark Silimi outlined the company’s collaboration with the Ministry of Education to equip the local workforce with the necessary skills for the upcoming S3 expansion project at the Kansanshi mine.

Through sponsorship programs and partnerships with educational institutions, FQM aims to develop a skilled workforce tailored to the needs of the mining sector.

President Hichilema urged mining companies like FQM to prioritize the employment of skilled locals, particularly in regions where mines are located, before seeking labor from other provinces.

He emphasized the importance of skills training and urged workers to embrace opportunities for skill development to enhance their employability.

In response to the President’s call, FQM reaffirmed its commitment to investing in its employees and local communities. The company believes that a productive and inclusive workplace is essential for the long-term sustainability and growth of the mining sector.

By empowering its workforce and embracing diversity, FQM aims to contribute to the economic resilience and prosperity of Zambia.

FQM acknowledges that the strength of the mining sector lies in its people and is dedicated to creating opportunities for employees to thrive and contribute to the nation’s development goals.
