FPI Advocates for Press Freedom on World Press Freedom Day
In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, the Zambia Free Press Initiative (FPI) issued a heartfelt statement, highlighting the challenges faced by journalists in the country and emphasizing the critical role of press freedom in society.
Under the theme “A Press for The Planet: Journalism in The Face of Environmental Crisis,” the FPI stood in solidarity with journalists globally and particularly in Zambia, expressing concern over a troubling trend of arrests and intimidation of journalists in the past year.
Joan Chirwa, the Executive Director of FPI, underscored the gravity of these actions, stating that they not only violate press freedom but also impede the public’s right to information, thereby undermining the foundations of a free and fair society.
In line with this year’s theme, Ms. Chirwa stressed the significance of journalism in addressing environmental crises, calling on journalists to delve into environmental issues, provide accurate information, counter disinformation campaigns, and amplify the voices of affected communities.
The FPI acknowledged the Zambian government’s efforts to improve journalist welfare and implement media self-regulation mechanisms.
However, she urged the government to prioritize journalist safety by implementing measures to protect them from harassment and violence.
Ms. Chirwa reiterated the importance of upholding the constitutional right to freedom of expression and press freedom, urging a renewed commitment to these principles on World Press Freedom Day.
The FPI pledged to continue advocating for better working conditions for journalists and ensuring their voices are heard, affirming their dedication to a free, fair, and fearless press in Zambia.
