Construction to Begin on Kasomeno-Mwenda Road and Bridge Project

Construction of the Kasomeno-Mwenda Road and Bridge in Zambia received a significant boost with the signing of a contract between Groupe Europeén de Development (GED) Projects Africa Zambia Limited and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The contract, signed at the Southern Sun Hotel in Lusaka, tasks CCECC with building the roads and drainage structures for the project.

GED Africa, the concessionaire for the project, previously signed agreements with Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

This PPP allows GED Africa to finance, design, construct, operate, maintain, and collect tolls on the Kasomeno-Kasenga-Chalwe-Mwenda Road.

The project also includes the construction of a One Stop Border Post (OSBP) and a bridge over the Luapula River.

The total project cost is estimated at US$180 million, with a concession period of 25 years.

Construction is expected to take three years, with CCECC mobilizing equipment on site this month (May 2024) for a June 2024 start date.

This project is expected to improve trade and regional integration between Zambia and the DRC.
