Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala has emphasized the need for transformative actions to tackle the challenges of inadequate market infrastructure and create sustainable urban food environments conducive to the sale of fresh foods.

Speaking at a workshop organized by ICLEI and GIZ on Strengthening Local Fresh Food Markets for Healthier Food Environments, Mayor Chitangala, represented by Independence Ward 17 Councillor Mubotu Madyenkunku, underscored the importance of well-established local fresh food markets.

She highlighted their role in providing residents with access to fresh, nutritious foods, thereby promoting healthier and more diverse diets.

The Mayor emphasized the significance of improved urban food environments, which prioritize better storage systems, effective waste management, and proper access to sanitary facilities.

The workshop, attended by various stakeholders including Market Masters, traders, and environmentalists, aimed to address these challenges and foster sustainable practices in fresh food markets.

ICLEI, in partnership with GIZ, has been collaborating with the Lusaka City Council on implementing a Sustainable Fresh Food Markets Project.

This project seeks to build resilient food systems to meet the growing demand for healthier and more diverse nutrition in the city.
