Six Arrested in Connection with South African Footballer Luke Fleurs’ Murder

South African authorities have arrested six suspects in connection with the murder and hijacking of footballer Luke Fleurs. The 24-year-old defender was shot dead on April 3rd at a gas station in Johannesburg.

The breakthrough came after a team led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni was assigned to investigate the case.

According to a police statement, this team successfully tracked down and arrested six individuals in Soweto early on Wednesday. Fleurs’ vehicle, which had been stripped of parts, was recovered a day earlier.

Investigators believe the arrested individuals are part of a larger carjacking syndicate operating in Gauteng province. The search for additional suspects continues.

The team responsible for the arrests included specialists from various units: a tracking team, the SAPS Provincial Investigation Unit, National Crime Intelligence, Drone Unit, Honeydew Detectives and Crime Intelligence, CAP Special Operations, and Fidelity Specialized Services.

The six suspects are expected to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 12th, 2024.
