ZESCO Chairman Urges Utilization of Africa’s Resources for the Benefit of Its People
ZESCO Limited’s Board Chairman, Vickson Ncube, has called upon the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) Executive Committee to harness the abundant natural resources of the continent to improve the lives of Africans.
Speaking at the opening of the 56th Executive Committee Meeting of SAPP at Ciêla Resort and Spa in Lusaka on Thursday, April 4th, 2024, Mr. Ncube highlighted the continent’s enduring socio-economic challenges despite its wealth of natural resources.
“Our forefathers envisioned an integrated Africa where our collective wisdom and resources would serve the continent’s benefit. However, we have yet to realize this vision,” remarked Mr. Ncube, expressing concern over Africa’s continued reliance on weather patterns and climate for economic stability.
Emphasizing the need for African experts to address these challenges, Mr. Ncube stressed the importance of engineers, accountants, and economists in finding solutions.
“The Africa we desire is integrated, peaceful, and prosperous, driven by its own citizens. SADC plays a crucial role in achieving this vision,” he added.
Mr. Ncube commended the ongoing integration of Power Pools across Africa, expressing hope for further development in interconnections to ensure efficient power distribution continent-wide.
“It is our duty as Africans to create a self-confident continent that contributes positively to global peace and progress,” he affirmed.
The SAPP, currently comprising 17 power utilities from 12 SADC countries, sees Zambia as the outgoing Chair. ZESCO, along with Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company, Ndola Energy Limited, and Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc, co-hosted the event. Notable sponsors included Zambia National Commercial Bank, ABSA Bank Plc, GreenCo, NR Electric Co. Ltd, and Maamba Collieries Limited.
The Executive Committee, composed of chief executive officers from member power utilities, convenes bi-annually to address strategic matters. ZESCO Limited’s Managing Director, Eng. Victor Benjamin Mapani, served as the former chairperson of the EXCO in 2022.
