Northwestern Province Chiefs Seek to Replicate COMACO Model for Community Development
Three traditional leaders from the Northwestern Province of Zambia recently undertook a learning visit to COMACO (Community Markets for Conservation), led by Chief Mumena of the Kaonde people under the Lumwana Community Trust.
The visit aimed to gain insights into COMACO’s innovative approach and explore opportunities for replicating its successful model in the Northwestern Province.
Chief Mumena, accompanied by chiefs Matebo and Mukumbi, expressed confidence in COMACO’s collaborative approach with communities and its tangible impact on agricultural markets and carbon trade funds.
He emphasized the potential of adopting COMACO’s model as a pathway to poverty alleviation in Zambia, urging the government to take keen interest in implementing it.
“We don’t need to start from scratch; COMACO has learned from its mistakes. By adopting this model, we can develop our communities and eradicate poverty in Zambia,” Chief Mumena stated.
He highlighted COMACO’s success in empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture practices, emphasizing the importance of community ownership in the process.
COMACO CEO Dale Lewis welcomed the royal visit, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to empowering farmers and fostering sustainable agriculture.
He stressed the significance of knowledge-sharing and collaboration in transforming communities and building a prosperous Zambia.
The visit is expected to pave the way for further exchange visits and partnerships, with a renewed commitment to implementing the COMACO model in the Northwestern Province.
This initiative holds promise for sustainable development and economic empowerment in the region.
