President Ramaphosa Applauds UN Security Council’s Call for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire During Ramadan

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his approval of Resolution 2728 (2024) adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on March 25, 2024, demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, particularly during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

“We must seize the opportunity presented by this Security Council Resolution to create a firm foundation for a permanent ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations. We need to stop the carnage and begin walking a path to peace,” stated President Ramaphosa.

The President emphasized the importance of ensuring compliance with the resolution, which holds binding implications for the involved parties. He urged the UNSC to monitor closely to ensure adherence.

South Africa remains deeply troubled by the prolonged conflict, with President Ramaphosa expressing concern over the significant loss of life, including over 13,000 children, in five months since the escalation of the conflict.

Resolution 2728 underscores the urgent necessity to enhance humanitarian assistance and reinforce the protection of civilians throughout the Gaza Strip.

President Ramaphosa stressed the imperative for parties to comply with the Security Council’s demand for the removal of barriers hindering the provision of humanitarian aid, aligning with international humanitarian law and preceding resolutions 2712 (2023) and 2720 (2023).

The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa issued the statement, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to advocating for peace and stability in the region.
