President Hichilema Welcomes Transparency International’s Support in Anti-Corruption Efforts
President Hakainde Hichilema warmly greeted the Global Chairperson of Transparency International, Professor François Valerian, and his team, which included members from the Zambian Chapter, as they arrived at State House, marking a significant step in Zambia’s dedication to fighting corruption.
During the meeting, President Hichilema commended Transparency International for its steadfast support to Zambia over the past two decades, particularly acknowledging their role in hosting the International Anti-Corruption Conference in the country.
The President expressed satisfaction at the recent improvement in Zambia’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI), which rose from 33 to 37, but stressed the ongoing necessity for further action to tackle corruption effectively.
Highlighting measures implemented by the Zambian government, President Hichilema emphasized the establishment of the Judicial Training Institute aimed at enhancing justice delivery capacities.
Additionally, he referenced the promulgation of Statutory Instrument No. 10 of 2024, which ensures the expedited disposal of corruption cases within five months, demonstrating a proactive approach to address concerns regarding delays in legal proceedings.
Recognizing the multifaceted impacts of corruption, President Hichilema underscored the importance of asset recovery processes addressing restitution for victims affected by stolen resources.
He urged for a collaborative effort with Transparency International to leverage their extensive experience in anti-corruption endeavors, aiming to bolster Zambia’s efforts against corrupt practices.
In response, Professor François Valerian expressed appreciation for Zambia’s commitment to transparency and anti-corruption efforts. He pledged Transparency International’s continued support and collaboration with the Zambian government to enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures.
