Minister of Foreign Affairs Delivers Comprehensive Report on AU Summit to Parliament
Hon. Mulambo Haimbe SC, M.P, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, provided a detailed account of Zambia’s participation in the 37th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Hon. Haimbe outlined Zambia’s engagement with the Summit, which was held under the theme “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa.”
He highlighted the importance of education in achieving sustainable continental growth and affirmed Zambia’s support for the theme.
The Zambian delegation, led by President Hakainde Hichilema, participated in various discussions and events during the Summit. Notably, President Hichilema officiated at a ceremony unveiling the statue of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, emphasizing his legacy as one of the founding fathers of the AU.
Key discussions during the Summit included the evaluation of the AU Agenda 2063, the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program (CAADP), and Africa’s participation in the Group of 20 (G20). Zambia pledged its commitment to addressing challenges in these areas and offered to host the C10 Ministerial Meeting in 2025.
Furthermore, Zambia endorsed the candidature of Mr. Mubita Nawa for the position of Interpol Secretary-General and supported Ambassador Inonge Mbikusita Lewanika’s appointment as Chairperson of the African Peer Review Panel of Eminent Persons.
President Hichilema also actively participated in high-level dialogues, advocating for Africa’s financial independence through the establishment of the African Central Bank and reforms in global financial institutions.
Minister Haimbe concluded by reaffirming Zambia’s commitment to the AU and its role as a platform for collective action toward a prosperous and peaceful Africa.
