President Chakwera Urges Malawians to Uphold National Pride
During the commemoration of Martyr’s Day at Nkhata-bay district Hospital Ground, President Lazarus Chakwera delivered a stirring address, urging Malawians to resist allowing individuals from other countries to disparage their nation.
He emphasized that Malawi’s warmth and resilience should not be taken for granted, particularly in the face of external criticisms.
President Chakwera highlighted the significance of Martyr’s Day as an occasion to remember and honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s freedom, particularly referencing the events of 1959.
He emphasized that the sacrifices made by the country’s forefathers should serve as a source of inspiration for present-day citizens to actively contribute to the betterment of Malawi.
Rather than dwelling on sorrow, President Chakwera urged Malawians to view Martyr’s Day as an opportunity for gratitude and reflection. He emphasized the importance of unity and national pride in healing the wounds of the past and propelling the country towards progress.
Vuwa Kaunda, Member of Parliament for Nkhata-bay Central Constituency, commended President Chakwera for his inclusivity towards opposition parties, noting that it allows for diverse perspectives to be heard in national forums.
However, he also raised concerns about the need for improved infrastructure, including additional police houses and a hospital in the Thotho area of the district.
Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, echoed President Chakwera’s sentiments on the significance of freedom and highlighted the establishment of Mega Farms across the country as a symbol of progress and development.
Representing the bereaved family, James Thawi praised President Chakwera’s leadership and inclusivity, particularly in allowing members of the opposition to participate in the Martyr’s Day commemorations.
The Martyr’s Day event was held under the theme ‘Remembering Our Heroes: Upholding Their Legacy Through Unity and Progress’, underscoring the importance of unity and progress in honoring the sacrifices of past heroes and shaping the future of Malawi.
