FQM Invests K2.6M to Empower Solwezi Cooperatives
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has reaffirmed its commitment to community development by doubling its support for small business cooperatives in the areas surrounding its Kansanshi mine in Solwezi.
Through its Tujipamo Community Project, FQM has disbursed K2.6 million to 12 cooperatives, aiming to empower local entrepreneurs and foster sustainable economic growth.
Building on the success of last year’s pilot project, which supported six cooperatives with over K5 million, FQM’s Kansanshi Mining operation has expanded its community support initiatives.
The grant funding provided to each cooperative, amounting to K220,000, will enable them to engage in business activities and contribute to the economic prosperity of their communities.
Pamela Chola, Contracts Manager at Kansanshi Mining, emphasized FQM’s dedication to entrepreneurship and community upliftment during the cheque handover ceremony.
She highlighted the company’s holistic approach to community investment, which includes providing dedicated support and mentorship to ensure the success and sustainability of funded initiatives.
Ms. Chola stated, “The Tujipamo Community Project reflects our commitment to supporting our community in a meaningful and lasting way. We believe in the potential of our community members to create sustainable businesses, and this project aims to empower them to grow beyond their current capacities.”
Acknowledging the challenges faced by Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in accessing finance, Ms. Chola underscored FQM’s role in facilitating financial support for SMEs to promote their growth and create employment opportunities within the community.
Marvis Ikowa, speaking on behalf of the Amen Sisters Cooperative, expressed gratitude for FQM’s support, highlighting the transformative impact the funds will have on their lives and the wider community. She pledged to invest the money wisely for the benefit of all stakeholders.
