Zambia Advocates Balanced Approach in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict at ICJ
The Republic of Zambia delivered a resolute oral statement regarding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and balanced perspective towards resolving the issue.
Led by Mr. Marshal Muchende, Solicitor General of Zambia, the delegation presented Zambia’s stance before a panel of fifteen Judges, responding to a request for an Advisory Opinion by the United Nations General Assembly.
The request sought legal guidance on the ramifications of Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.
Mr. Muchende articulated Zambia’s recognition of the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination alongside acknowledging the legitimate security concerns of Israel.
Emphasizing the importance of upholding international human rights law and humanitarian law, he underscored Zambia’s commitment to a negotiated solution that embraces a two-state outcome.
The Solicitor General highlighted Zambia’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people’s rights within the United Nations, urging a nuanced approach to address the complexities of the conflict.
He stressed the necessity for both parties to consider the failures of past negotiations before exploring alternative avenues for resolution.
Furthermore, Zambia proposed that the ultimate resolution lies in the hands of the Israelis and Palestinians themselves, advocating for a settlement through negotiations rather than external imposition.
Mr. Muchende reiterated Zambia’s call for relentless efforts towards achieving peace in the Middle East, anchored on the principles of the two-state solution.
The delegation, including H.E Mr. Sylvester Mundanda, Ambassador of the Republic of Zambia to the BENELUX countries, and senior government officials, presented Zambia’s position with clarity and conviction, underlining the country’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region.
