Lusaka Mayor Supports Renaming of Roads in Honor of Namibian Leaders

The Mayor of Lusaka, Her Worship Ms. Chilando Chitangala, has welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema’s decision to rename certain roads in Lusaka after the late Namibian President Hage Geingob and former President Sam Nujoma.

In an interview with Crown TV Zambia, Mayor Chitangala expressed her support for President Hichilema’s announcement, stating that it aligns with the Lusaka City Council’s mandate to name streets and roads within the city.

She confirmed that the decision to rename the roads was made unanimously by the full council following a consultative meeting with councillors.

The announcement came after President Hichilema’s tribute at the funeral of President Geingob, during which he declared that two roads in Lusaka would be named after the distinguished Namibian leaders.

Mayor Chitangala emphasized the strong ties between Zambia and Namibia, highlighting President Geingob’s 17-year residency in Lusaka and former President Nujoma’s significant presence in the city.

The Mayor clarified that the roads to be renamed, Kasama Road and Shantumbu Road, are currently informal names not yet formalized in the Lusaka City Council’s road registry. She reiterated that the renaming initiative symbolizes the mutual respect and shared history between the two nations.

Chola Mwamba, Public Relations Manager for the Lusaka City Council, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, emphasizing that the renaming of the roads is a testament to the enduring friendship between Zambia and Namibia.

The initiative honors the legacies of President Geingob and former President Nujoma while strengthening the bond between the two countries.

The renaming of Kasama Road and Shantumbu Road serves as a fitting tribute to the contributions of these esteemed Namibian leaders and further solidifies the historical and cultural connections between Zambia and Namibia.
