Zambian Gov’t Advances Towards Ratification of AU Protocol on Social Security
The Zambian government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, has taken significant strides towards the ratification of the African Union Protocol on Social Protection and Social Security.
This move underscores a commitment to fortifying transformative opportunities within Zambia’s social protection landscape through the establishment of an effective and efficient legal framework.
Principal Planner at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Susan Musonda, emphasized the importance of comprehensive legislation on social protection, noting its pivotal role in advancing human and social development.
Speaking on a radio program sponsored by the Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) on Radio Christian Voice, Ms. Musonda highlighted the government’s dedication to overcoming challenges hindering the effective implementation of social protection programs.
Ms. Musonda underscored the significance of aligning the forthcoming National Social Protection Policy (NSPP) with contemporary issues such as the Cash Plus concept, Single Window Initiative, Shock-Responsive elements of social protection, and the Integrated Social Protection Information System (ZISPIS).
She emphasized that these measures, once implemented in accordance with the protocol, are poised to yield far-reaching impacts on Zambia’s socio-economic development, particularly in addressing escalating vulnerability levels.
Moreover, Ms. Musonda emphasized that the commitment to implement measures specified in the protocol will not only bolster Zambia’s international standing but also align with global human rights principles and the nation’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to poverty reduction.
