Zambian Government Clarifies Misleading Reports on Chishimba Kambwili’s Medical Evacuation
The Zambian Ministry of Health has issued a statement refuting recent claims published in the Daily Nation Newspaper regarding the medical evacuation of Mr. Chishimba Kambwili to South Africa. The Ministry asserts that the article is inaccurate and lacks factual basis.
Contrary to the misinformation circulating in the media, Mr. Kambwili was admitted to Maina Soko Medical Centre on February 8th, 2024, where he received treatment from a team of specialist doctors.
Upon their recommendation, President Hakainde Hichilema, through the Minister of Health, authorized Mr. Kambwili’s immediate air evacuation to Milpark Hospital in South Africa.
The Ministry clarified that on February 11th, 2024, Mr. Kambwili was transferred from Maina Soko Medical Centre to the airport via ambulance, accompanied by a full set of medical staff.
The Zambian Government covered the cost of two return air tickets for Mr. Kambwili and his chosen caregiver, his daughter. Additionally, a specialist doctor accompanied Mr. Kambwili to South Africa, all expenses paid by the government.
It is emphasized that the selection of the caregiver was made by Mr. Kambwili himself, and it is standard practice for patients referred by the government for medical treatment abroad to be accompanied by their relatives or caregivers, with all expenses covered by the Zambian Government.
Dr. Kalangwa Kalangwa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, urged the media to verify news items before publication, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and cooperation with the media in Zambia.
This statement from the Ministry of Health aims to set the record straight regarding Mr. Kambwili’s medical evacuation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring proper medical care for all citizens in need.
