Zambian Minister Urges Action as Prolonged Dry Spells Threaten Food, Energy, and Water Security
Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, MP, Minister of Green Economy and Environment, addressed the Zambian Parliament on the concerning developments in the 2023/2024 rainfall season.
The Minister highlighted the persistence of the El Niño climate phenomenon, resulting in below-average rainfall and prolonged dry spells across the country.
This weather pattern has significantly impacted various sectors, including agriculture, water resources, energy generation, livestock, and ecosystems.
The statement outlined the challenges posed by the delayed onset of rains, below-normal rainfall amounts, and the adverse effects of excessive rainfall, including flash floods and waterborne diseases.
Moreover, prolonged dry spells since January 20th, 2024, coupled with high temperatures, are exacerbating soil moisture depletion and threatening agricultural activities and water availability.
To address these challenges, the Minister issued advisories for stakeholders, including farmers, water users, energy consumers, and the general public.
These advisories emphasized the importance of monitoring weather updates, implementing water conservation measures, seeking alternative livelihoods, and adopting energy-efficient practices.
Furthermore, the government has initiated a rapid assessment of the impacts, deploying joint teams of experts to evaluate crop damage, food security, and water and energy security across affected areas.
Once complete, the government will issue a comprehensive report with recommendations for targeted interventions to support affected communities and mitigate adverse effects.
In conclusion, Minister Nzovu stressed the urgency of coordinated action from all stakeholders to address the significant challenges posed by the current weather conditions.
The government remains committed to ensuring food, energy, and water security amidst changing climatic conditions and appreciates the collaboration and support among government departments and agencies.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate health and safety risks associated with the dry conditions.
The government reassures its commitment to addressing the nexus of food, energy, and water security amidst the prevailing climatic challenges.
