Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Leads SADC Committee Meeting
Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation at Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, chaired a significant virtual gathering today.
The meeting convened senior officials of the SADC Inter-State Politics and Diplomacy Committee of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Gundersen extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Namibia following the tragic passing of Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the late President of Namibia.
She led the attendees in observing a moment of silence in honor of Dr. Geingob, reflecting the deep respect and sympathy felt across the region for his loss.
Highlighting Zambia’s commitment to serving the SADC region diligently as Chair of the Organ for Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, Ms. Gundersen emphasized the importance of democratic and economic governance in the region.
She reiterated Zambia’s approach, guided by principles of solidarity, cooperation, and integration, in addressing regional challenges.
The meeting provided a platform to review progress on implementing decisions of key SADC bodies, including the Ministerial Committee of the Organ, Council of Ministers, and the SADC Summit.
It aimed to offer strategic direction on regional matters of politics, diplomacy, and democracy, while also focusing on strengthening SADC’s capacity to resolve conflicts and uphold democratic values through policy instruments.
Ms. Gundersen also expressed gratitude for the upcoming unveiling of a statue honoring His Excellency Dr. Julius Mwalimu Nyerere, Founding President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The monument, to be revealed during the 37th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, signifies a significant step in recognizing and honoring the contributions of SADC’s founders to the region’s development and unity.
