Govt Pledges to Combat Poverty Through Environmental Conservation
The government of Kasempa District in North Western province has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing poverty and bolstering environmental conservation efforts.
In a promising move, the government aims to implement initiatives that enhance ecosystem preservation and uplift community livelihoods.
District Commissioner Hyden Songezha underscored the government’s determination to tackle poverty levels during a recent event held in Kelongwa ward.
Speaking through District Administrative Officer Francis Makanga, Songezha emphasized the importance of measures geared towards poverty reduction and improving the standard of living for residents.
Key strategies highlighted by Songezha include promoting beekeeping, sustainable farming practices, and other initiatives aimed at conserving the environment and alleviating pressure on local forestry resources.
By fostering social protection programs, the government aims to build resilient communities capable of withstanding various challenges and advancing Sustainable Development Goals.
The government’s efforts received commendation from Wuchi Wami Field Consultant Chipangile Musongole, who lauded the initiatives aimed at improving farming techniques among Kelongwa communities.
Musongole expressed readiness to collaborate with the Kasempa Community Forest Management Association (KCFMA) to sustainably manage resources and generate revenue beyond 2024.
Under the initiative, Wuchi Wami donated 2,500 beehives and 240 packs of bean seeds to smallholder farmers in Kelongwa.
Acting District Forestry Officer Kapatuka Nyirenda expressed satisfaction with the government’s focus on environmental conservation, noting that the introduction of modern beehives would not only boost honey production but also alleviate pressure on local forests.
