Woman Jailed for Three Years for Fatal Genital Squeeze on Husband
A 43-year-old woman from Nyimba has been sentenced to three years in prison for manslaughter after a deadly altercation with her husband.
The confrontation occurred in March 2022 when the husband, Elias Katetha, arrived home inebriated and accused his wife, Grenda Nyangu, of infidelity.
Originally charged with murder, the accusation was later downgraded to manslaughter, to which Nyangu pleaded guilty before Lusaka-based High Court Judge Dancewell Bowa.
According to the statement of facts presented in court, the husband arrived home around 23:00 hours in a drunken state and began accusing his wife of involvement with other men.
A heated argument ensued, during which Nyangu struck him with a stool and, eventually, grabbed his genitals until he lost consciousness.
Neighbours rushed the unconscious husband to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Nyangu was initially charged with murder, but the charge was later reduced to manslaughter, to which she confessed.
During the trial, Nyangu expressed remorse and requested leniency, citing her status as a first-time offender. She also regretted causing the death of the father of her children.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Bowa emphasized that violence could never be justified, urging couples to seek non-violent resolutions to disagreements. The judge sentenced Nyangu to three years in prison, effective from the date of her arrest.
