Tanzania Lifts Ban on Kenya Airways Flights Following Diplomatic Resolution

Tanzania has officially reinstated approval for Kenya Airways to operate flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam after a brief suspension. The move came in response to a tit-for-tat dispute between the two countries’ national carriers.

Tanzania initially announced a ban on Kenya Airways flights on Monday, citing Kenya’s refusal to permit cargo flights by Tanzania’s Air Tanzania between the two nations. However, in a diplomatic breakthrough, Kenya has now granted the requested permissions to Air Tanzania.

In an official statement on Tuesday, the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority declared the withdrawal of its decision to ban Kenya Airways. The statement read, “Following this development, the aeronautical authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania hereby withdraw its decision of 15th January 2024, and therefore approval for Kenya Airways to operate between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam is hereby restored.”

This diplomatic resolution signifies the importance of maintaining air travel connections between the two East African nations. Kenya Airways, being one of Africa’s largest airlines, plays a crucial role in facilitating travel and trade.

Tanzania, known for its natural attractions, relies on air connectivity to boost tourism, attracting over a million visitors annually.

Tanzania has been actively investing in the revitalization of its national carrier, Air Tanzania, since 2016. The country has expanded its fleet, routes, and operations to enhance its presence in both local and regional markets.

The restoration of flight approvals is expected to contribute to the normalization of relations between Tanzania and Kenya, fostering continued cooperation in various sectors, including tourism and trade.
