President Hichilema Focuses on Rural Development in Zambia
President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the importance of rural development as a key focus of his administration’s National Decentralisation Policy and the Zambia Devolution Support programme, launched in May 2023.
The initiatives aim to facilitate the smooth transfer of functions from the Central Government to Local Authorities across Zambia. President Hichilema underscored the significance of equitable development in all regions, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.
One notable aspect of the administration’s commitment to this cause is the increased budgetary allocation towards the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). The President envisions a Zambia where opportunities are not concentrated solely in urban centers but are distributed across the entire landscape.
Expressing concern about the trend of rural to urban migration, President Hichilema urged citizens to carefully consider their decisions, emphasizing that hasty relocations could lead to destitution.
While acknowledging the natural aspects of migration, the President highlighted the potential within rural areas and encouraged citizens to explore opportunities in agriculture.
President Hichilema emphasized that the government is actively creating an enabling environment in rural areas, with a focus on agriculture as a cornerstone of the rural development strategy. The President urged citizens to embrace the vast potential of land for cultivation and breeding of crops and animals.
Affordable housing in rural areas is another critical aspect addressed by the administration. President Hichilema emphasized that decent housing initiatives are not limited to urban settlements, with the commitment to make housing more accessible in rural communities.
In tandem with rural development efforts, the President highlighted the empowerment of the Rural Electrification Authority to connect more communities to the national power supply grid. This initiative is expected to enhance the quality of life in rural areas and unlock new possibilities for economic activities.
President Hichilema called upon citizens to play a pivotal role in the success of these initiatives, stressing the collective responsibility to ensure the full realization of the benefits of rural development programs.
The President concluded the address with a blessing for the citizens and the country, reaffirming his commitment to fostering prosperity across both urban and rural landscapes.
