Zambia Reaffirms Strong Ties with the European Union
Today Zambia hosted the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Union Parliament, led by Mr. David McAllister of the European People’s Party (EPP). The meeting took place at State House, where President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed the EU delegation.
Highlighting the pivotal role of the European Union in Zambia’s development, President Hichilema expressed gratitude for the EU’s consistent financial and technical support.
The longstanding partnership, rooted in principles of human rights, governance, the rule of law, and democracy, has been instrumental in various sectors, including health, trade, environmental sustainability, education, and poverty reduction.
Acknowledging the EU’s contributions to Zambia’s economic reconstruction, particularly during the debt-restructuring process under the G20 Officials Creditors Committee, President Hichilema emphasized the positive impact of this support on the lives of the Zambian people.
During the discussions, both parties called for enhanced cooperation between Zambia and the EU to promote global peace and stability. Concerns were voiced over the prolonged conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to advocating for peaceful resolutions to these conflicts through dialogue.
The visit underscored the significance of diplomatic relations between Zambia and the European Union, reinforcing the shared commitment to fostering mutual understanding, development, and global harmony.
