Zambia Government Pledges Strategic Embrace of STEM for National Development

The Ministry of Technology and Science in Zambia, led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu, announced a strategic focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as a key driver for socio-economic development. 

This commitment aligns with the eighth National Development Plan and Vision 2030, as outlined by His Excellency, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.

Speaking at the Zambia Science Conference and the 2nd Women in STEM conference, Dr. Habeenzu emphasized the pivotal role of STEM in achieving the nation’s developmental goals. 

The conference, themed “Breaking Barriers and Building Smart Partnerships,” aimed to foster collaboration and innovation within the STEM community.

Dr. Habeenzu stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment for the promotion of STEM, highlighting the need for establishing and promoting smart partnerships to advance these fields.

The Permanent Secretary expressed encouragement that the conference provided a platform for women and girls in STEM to access exceptional opportunities, irrespective of age, educational status, ethical background, heritage, or personal circumstances.

“In an era defined by technological advancements, possessing the skills to operate, use, and create technology and science-based solutions is critical for the progress of young people and fundamental for the health, education, and empowerment of girls and women,” stated Dr. Habeenzu.

He underscored the significance of leveraging science, technology, and innovation through smart partnerships, making them cornerstones for sustainable progress and human advancement. 

Dr. Habeenzu envisioned a future where science, technology, and innovation become beacons guiding Zambia toward prosperity.

“In a world that has witnessed remarkable achievements in the realm of science and technology, influencing our lives profoundly, one cannot thrive without science, technology, and innovation,” he added.

The announcement signifies Zambia’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration in STEM fields. 

As the nation strives for sustainable development, placing STEM at the forefront reflects an understanding of the transformative power these disciplines hold in shaping a brighter and prosperous future. 

The conference serves as a testament to Zambia’s dedication to advancing STEM and empowering women in these crucial fields.
