Zambian Opposition Promises to Protect the Constitution and Follow the Law, No Matter What the President Does
In a notable development, Zambian Opposition members of Parliament have issued a resolute statement reaffirming their commitment to defending the Constitution and upholding the rule of law, even if it means challenging the President’s actions.
The statement, released on September 27, 2023, by Honourable Brian Mundubile, Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, expressed deep concern over what they view as the President’s attempt to disregard established legal and government processes when making appointments. The Opposition members found it alarming that the President appeared irritated when there were calls to adhere to the law and government procedures enshrined in Zambia’s Republican Constitution.
The statement emphasized the crucial role of the Republican Constitution in holding governments accountable and ensuring that they operate within the bounds of the law. Regardless of the President’s personal sentiments, the Opposition members underscored that he and his government must govern within the confines of the law and adhere to established government procedures.
The Opposition called on President Hichilema to set aside personal feelings when making decisions that require strict adherence to the law and government protocols. They emphasized that the Republican Constitution is supreme, leaving no room for deviations from its provisions.
Additionally, the statement addressed the issue of restricting former President Edgar Lungu’s routine fitness run, asserting that the government lacks the authority to curtail the free movement of the former head of state unless specific legal provisions grant such powers to the current Inspector General of Police.
The statement concluded by urging all well-meaning Zambians to pray for the Inspector General of Police, expressing concerns about his approach to policing and handling of the situation involving the former President.
This statement highlights the paramount importance of upholding the rule of law and the Constitution in Zambia’s political landscape and reflects ongoing debates and tensions surrounding these issues.
